Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 18, 2026
WordReel ("WordReel," "we," "us," or "our") makes a mobile app that teaches English vocabulary through movie clips. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through the WordReel app (Android and iOS) and our supporting services, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to everyone who uses WordReel, and it's written to describe exactly what the app does — not a generic template.
If you don't agree with this policy, please don't use the app. By creating a WordReel account or otherwise using the app, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.
1. Information we collect
Information you provide directly
To use WordReel beyond guest/local mode, you create an account in one of two ways: with an email address and password, or with Sign in with Google. Depending on the method, we receive your email address, and optionally the display name and profile identifier Google makes available. We never see or store your Google password, and we never store your WordReel password ourselves — authentication is handled entirely by Firebase Authentication (see "Third-party service providers" below).
Once you have an account, you may also provide:
- Learning preferences: native language, chosen CEFR level (A1–C2), daily word goal
- App settings: notification, sound, and autoplay preferences
Information collected automatically
As you use the app, we automatically record your learning activity, including:
- Words you've viewed, marked as favorite, marked as hard, or completed
- Spaced-repetition scheduling data (review dates, streak, difficulty) generated by our review algorithm
- Lesson completion and accuracy
- XP, streaks, and other in-app progress metrics
- Subscription/entitlement status (see "Subscriptions & payments")
We do not use Firebase Analytics, Google Analytics, or any crash-reporting SDK in the app. We don't track your precise location, and the app doesn't request access to your camera, microphone, contacts, or photo library — it has no code path that would use any of them.
Information from third parties
If you sign in with Google, Google shares basic profile information (name, email, a unique account identifier) with us, subject to your permission at the time of sign-in and their own privacy policy.
2. How we use your information
We use the information above to:
- Create and maintain your account, and sync your progress across devices
- Run spaced-repetition scheduling so review timing adapts to what you find hard or easy
- Determine which content (e.g. all movie clips vs. a limited set) your account is entitled to
- Send local review-reminder notifications on your device (see below — these are scheduled on-device, not sent from our servers)
- Respond to support requests you send us
- Maintain the security and integrity of the service, including detecting abuse
- Meet legal obligations, such as tax and accounting requirements tied to subscription payments
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your learning data to build advertising profiles about you.
3. Local storage & data sync
WordReel stores a local copy of your progress and settings directly on your device (using an on-device SQLite database), so the app works offline and feels instant. When you're signed in and connected to the internet, this data is synced to our backend so it's available if you reinstall the app or switch devices.
Review reminders are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device using your operating system's local notification system — we do not use push notifications, and no notification content is generated or sent from our servers.
Word definitions, example sentences, audio, and movie clips are downloaded from our content delivery bucket as you use the app. Downloading this content does not require an account and is not tied to your identity — clip requests are only checked against your account to confirm subscription entitlement.
4. Advertising
The free tier of WordReel is supported by ads served through Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device and advertising identifiers (such as your device's advertising ID), general device information, and ad interaction data in order to serve and measure ads. Depending on your region and consent choices, ads may be personalized based on this information.
- On iOS, we request your permission via Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework before any identifier is used for tracking across other companies' apps or websites; you can change this at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID, and opt out of personalized ads, in your device's Google Settings → Ads.
- Subscribing to WordReel Pro removes ads from the app entirely, which also stops further ad-related data collection from AdMob within the app.
Google's use of advertising data is governed by Google's Partner Sites policy .
5. Subscriptions & payments
WordReel Pro subscriptions are sold and billed entirely through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, using whichever payment method you have on file with them. We never see or store your card number or other payment details — that's handled directly by Apple/Google.
We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status across platforms. RevenueCat receives your purchase receipt from the app store and a pseudonymous app-user identifier (not your name or card details) to determine whether your account is entitled to Pro features, and shares that entitlement status back with our backend. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy for details on how they handle this data.
6. Third-party service providers
We rely on the following service providers to run WordReel. Each processes data on our behalf, under their own security and privacy terms:
| Provider | Purpose | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Firebase (Google) | Account authentication | Email, display name, sign-in identifiers |
| Google Cloud Platform | Backend hosting, content delivery (Cloud Run, Cloud Storage) | Progress data in transit; publicly-readable app content |
| Neon, Inc. | Managed Postgres database hosting for our backend | Account and progress records at rest |
| RevenueCat, Inc. | Subscription/entitlement management | Purchase receipts, pseudonymous app-user ID |
| Google AdMob | Ad serving (free tier only) | Advertising/device identifiers |
| Apple / Google Play | Payment processing, app distribution | Purchase transactions (we never receive payment details) |
We do not share your information with any other third party for their own marketing purposes, and we do not sell your personal information.
7. Data retention
We retain your account and progress data for as long as your account is active, so your learning history stays available across devices. If you delete your account (see "Your rights & choices"), your account record and everything tied to it in our backend is permanently deleted. Some information may be retained for a limited period afterward where required — for example, transaction records needed for tax/accounting purposes, or backups that roll off on their own retention schedule.
8. Data security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) between the app and our backend, and access controls on our infrastructure. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so while we work to protect your information, we can't guarantee absolute security.
9. Your rights & choices
- Delete your account: Open the app and go to Profile → Settings → Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account and every record tied to it in our backend (progress, streak, achievements, subscription-linking data), and clears your local data on that device. This action cannot be undone.
- Access or correct your data: Most of your data (level, goals, preferences) is editable directly in the app. For anything else — including a full copy of the data we hold about you — contact us using the details below and we'll respond within a reasonable time.
- Manage your subscription: Subscriptions are managed through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store subscription settings on your device, not through us directly.
- Manage notifications: Disable review reminders any time in Settings, or at the OS level in your device's notification settings.
- Ad personalization: See "Advertising" above for platform-specific opt-out steps.
10. Children's privacy
WordReel is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
11. International data transfers
Our service providers operate infrastructure primarily in the United States. If you're using WordReel from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country. We rely on our providers' standard safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses, where applicable) for these transfers.
12. California privacy rights
If you're a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) gives you the right to know what personal information we collect about you, request its deletion, and opt out of its "sale" or "sharing" (as those terms are defined by the law). We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising outside of the AdMob ad-serving described above. You can exercise these rights using the contact details below.
13. European / UK users (GDPR)
If you're in the European Economic Area or the UK, our legal bases for processing your information are: performance of our contract with you (running your account and syncing progress), our legitimate interests (keeping the service secure and improving it), your consent (where required, e.g. certain ad personalization), and legal obligations (e.g. tax records). You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your data, and to object to certain processing — contact us to exercise any of these. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, if we add a new feature or change a service provider. We'll update the "Effective date" at the top of this page when we do. If a change is significant, we'll provide more prominent notice, such as an in-app notification.
15. Contact us
If you have questions about this policy or want to exercise any of the rights described above, contact us at privacy@wordreel.org.
